Quality Control Engineer

Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking a Quality Control Engineer to perform within the Physics/ Research team to ensure quality control, inspection, and testing operations of specific clinical devices.

Hampton Proton is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and the largest free-standing proton clinic in the world. The state-of-the- art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating prostate, brain, lung, pediatric, head and neck, breast, CNS and other cancers since August 2010.

Quality Control Engineer

The Quality Control Engineer reports to the Chief Physicist. Primary responsibilities include the implementation of established quality assurance protocol for proton beam attenuation devices.

Responsibilities:

  • Acts as vendor liaison with the manufacturer of proton beam attenuation devices, performs QA inspection procedure for specific devices, and dis/assemble apertures and compensators by bolting, screwing and labeling.
  • Help elaborate measurement protocols for physicists to review for approval, participates in daily physics dose measurement testing and beam QA.
  • Provide engineering support to the Medical Physics group by designing, and constructing various test apparatus and fixtures used in beam tests and research.
  • Receive and provide quality assurance inspection via the Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM) on patient specific devices and provide technical support as needed during use in patient treatments.
  • Assist Physicists in collecting data for QA purposes from therapeutic and imaging systems.
  • Participate in Physics research projects, assist the Medical Physicists staff in the design, outfitting, and operation of a research laboratory to include fabrication and testing of prototype devices.
  • Assist with the efficient operation of workflow within the department by performing other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Physicist

Qualifications:

  • Quality control and testing experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer skills including computational scripting, C#, CAD or JAVA programs.
  • Demonstrate ability to read and interpret documents or outputs from the computer.
  • Familiarity with mechanical inspection instruments such as calipers and micrometers.

Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Science or Physics.
  • Mechanical Engineer with 5+ years of experience.
  • Machine shop experience with CMMs highly preferred.
  • Ability to push, pull, hold, and lift up to 50 lbs. with the use of hands/fingers for fine motor skills.
  • Work schedule is 12:30pm to 9:30pm with the ability to work 6:30am to 3:30pm as needed.
