Financial Counselor Assistant

Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking a Financial Counselor Assistant to perform within the Physics/ Research team to ensure quality control, inspection, and testing operations of specific clinical devices.

Hampton Proton is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and the largest free-standing proton clinic in the world. The state-of-the- art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating prostate, brain, lung, pediatric, head and neck, breast, CNS and other cancers since August 2010. Hampton Proton uses IBA’s Proteus 235 proton therapy delivery system, VeriSuite for IGRT, MOSAIQ Oncology Information System (Elektra), Eclipse Proton Treatment

Planning system (Varian) and a 4D-PET/CT for simulations (Philips), and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR Ingenia 3T) by Philips.

Our Proteus 235 system is equipped with IBA’s universal nozzles. We are using Uniform Scanning, Double Scattering, and Pencil Beam Scanning treatment delivery techniques in our treatment rooms.

Financial Counselor Assistant

The Financial Counselor Assistant reports to the Financial Counselor and indirectly to the Director of Finance & Administration while working alongside other professionals and support staff. The Financial Counselor Assistant will provide basic medical coding analysis, auditing, investigation, recommendations, research, and other support to ensure observance or conformity with official coding policies, regulations, requirements, and standards to prevent or recapture lost revenue from healthcare operations for Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton)..

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate positive customer service attitude and behavior.
  • Assist with obtaining insurance authorization for treatment and authorization extensions.
  • Track the patient’s insurance authorization, appeals, and schedule physician
  • peer-to-peers, if necessary.
  • Assures that patient information records are appropriately completed and obtains information from the patient for purpose of settling their claim with insurance carrier.
  • Assist with patient insurance appeals to prospective insurance companies.
  • Export charges to billing company, maintain billing/payment log, and reconcile charges on a daily basis.
  • Enter accurate demographic and insurance information into the patient’s
  • electronic chart.
  • Develops and utilizes computer reports and output for accounting records.
  • Assists in preparing financial and statistical reports as directed.
  • Assist with the efficient operation of workflow within the department by performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must have working knowledge of various insurance plans.
  • Must have proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, spreadsheet knowledge, and computer applications used for patient information data entry required.
  • Strong analytical skills, auditing skills with the ability to research and reconcile accounts.
  • Effective written, verbal, communication, and interpersonal skills in order to acquire needed information and maintain cooperative working relationships with physicians and staff.
  • Attention to detail and high-quality results oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize needs in order to meet deadlines.

Requirements: 

  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a related field of study preferred.
  • AMA certified preferred or will become certified.
  • Healthcare industry experience preferred.
