The event had a special guest too: NFL Hall of Famer defensive end and Hampton Roads native Bruce Smith.
In light of September being Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute hosted its first annual Prostate Cancer and Men’s Health Awareness Fair on Saturday morning.
The free event aimed to provide Hampton Roads with information on prostate cancer, general health and self-care, organizers said in a news release. It started at 9 a.m.

Local NFL greats to talk about men’s health in Hampton Saturday
HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A few local NFL greats are starting the conversation about prostate cancer at an event this weekend. The Hampton University Proton Therapy Center will host a free men’s health clinic and health panel.
Cancer screenings are important to catching the disease before it spreads. According to the American Cancer Society, about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. The Hampton University Proton Therapy Center is hosting a men’s health clinic with organizers hoping a panel of NFL greats can help motivate men.

Hampton student, 9, battles brain cancer with support system of family, school
At 5 years old, Maddie Davis was diagnosed with ependymoma, a type of brain cancer, and since has battled nine brain tumors and two spinal tumors. She has had multiple surgeries, rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Continuing with a clinical trial treatment in Washington D.C., 9-year-old Davis currently is battling three to six brain tumors and two to three spinal tumors.
