Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking an MRI Technologist to perform MRI examinations for therapeutic & diagnostic purposes while working alongside other professionals and support staff. Assist the Therapy department with PET/CT simulation patient set up and treatment room patient set up as the need arises.

Hampton Proton is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and the largest free-standing proton clinic in the world. The state-of- the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating prostate, brain, lung, pediatric, head and neck, breast, CNS and other cancers since August 2010.

The MRI Technologist (MT) reports directly to the Lead Radiation Therapists and the Chief Radiation Therapist (CRT). The MT provides exceptional patient care and safely performs MRI examinations with the highest quality and compassion for patients and their families.

  • Provide patient care through the consistent practice of departmental procedures for examinations.
  • Conduct screening interviews of patients to thoroughly identify contraindications or implants prior to performing MR procedures to include intravascular contrast media injections in compliance with all regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitor and maintain MRI zones to ensure safety for staff and patients.
  • Maintain up-to-date department safety and exam protocols for weekly/monthly machine QA functionality.
  • Maintain coordination of MR related activities and provide patient education by discussing MR procedure with patient and assure his/her understanding.
  • Perform periodic chart checks for completeness of documentation.
  • Acquire and evaluate digital portal images for technical quality to input/upload related data into the oncology record and verify system.
  • Order MRI supplies and maintaining quality control in accordance with facility and department standards.
  • Effectively and in a timely manner communicate challenges with the Chief Radiation Therapist.
  • Able to successfully complete MRI Level II and the basic radiation safety training.
  • Assure the efficient operation of workflow in the department by performing other duties as assigned by the CRT.

  • MR Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT).
  • Be able to physically assist patients entering and exiting the imaging suite which requires the ability to lift, pull, push and move up to 40 pounds.
