Hampton University has been awarded a $380,000 workforce development grand by the Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The grant will be used to staff the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute (HUPTI).
"The HRSA grant will help the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute boost the local and regional economy by funding staff positions such as dosimetrists, nurses, physicists, x-ray technicians," said Bill Thomas, associate vice president, Government Affairs, Hampton University.
"At full operation, HUPTI will employ 127 people yielding over $5.1 million back into the economy," said Cynthia Keppel, Ph.D., scientific and technical director, HUPTI. "Hiring for the center has already begun and will be an ongoing process."
"We are so appreciative of Congressman's Bobby Scott's legislative support of this HRSA grant and the good that it will do in creating and sustaining high level jobs in the City of Hampton," said Thomas.
